What an event! The TOPSIM Simulation Days 2025 in Tübingen showcased just how intense, surprising, and inspiring business simulations can be, as well as how enjoyable it is to immerse oneself in this dynamic environment.
Kickoff with Competition Fever
The Simulation Competition began right away. Teams assembled at random developed their initial strategies and had to establish themselves in the market. With limited resources, increasing competition, and constant pressure, it soon became clear that no plan could survive long-term when random events altered the framework. Sometimes, free raw materials would suddenly appear as if they had “fallen off the truck,” and at other times, demand would spike unexpectedly. The teams had to stay agile and adapt quickly.
One team caught everyone’s attention with their impressive comeback story. Despite a rough start that left them far behind, they refused to get discouraged. Instead, they adapted their strategy with confidence and precision. Step by step, they fought their way back, ultimately securing a strong position.
Workshops & Learning Moments — Day 1
The morning began with a case study that demonstrated the realism and relevance of business simulations. The session bridged the gap between competitive gameplay and analyzing real-world business processes.
In the afternoon, the teams experienced group dynamics, conflicting goals, and cooperation firsthand. They had to make quick decisions, set priorities, and resolve conflicts while building towers out of LEGO bricks under time pressure. In true TOPSIM style, the exercise brought team dynamics to life in a very tangible way.
Next was the Support Challenge, which required answering difficult questions from the simulation using reports, the manual, and cloud-based data. This challenge tested analytical thinking and collaboration skills. Those who succeeded received the Support Challenge Award.
By the end of the day, the teams had made it through three rounds of decisions, demonstrating great perseverance along the way.
Workshops and Learning Moments — Day 2
On the second day, the focus was on workshops designed to enhance seminar instruction skills. One session, titled “Safety Islands“, examined seminar phases and common stressors. It presented methods and tools to help seminar instructors stay calm in challenging situations.
The Seminar Design Workshop offered practical advice on creating effective agendas, facilitating meaningful reflections, and designing supplementary tasks that maximize the effectiveness of simulation games.
Exchange & Community
In addition to the competition and workshops, there was ample opportunity for networking. During the Open Forum, participants shared their experiences, reflected on challenges, and collaboratively developed solutions. This fostered a vibrant exchange of tips and tricks between teams.
It was inspiring to see so many new faces, including participants with no prior experience. This is what made the Simulation Days special—everyone had the chance to participate and contribute.
Energy, Outlook & Conclusion
The program included an interactive quiz, a round of bingo, and other short activities designed to energize participants. Lively conversations took place during coffee breaks. The spontaneous TOPSIM Experience challenge provided an additional boost. As we enjoyed the view of Tübingen’s rooftops, we realized the event’s insights would have a lasting impact.
The top-performing team was announced at the end of the Simulation Days—a fitting finale to two days of competition, teamwork, and valuable learning experiences.
